The NFPA Standard
NFPA 101: Life Safety Code
Reliable Battery Systems: Battery-operated emergency lights must use reliable, rechargeable batteries that are properly maintained and approved for their intended use. All batteries must comply with NFPA standards to ensure safety and performance.
Monthly Inspections: Emergency lighting systems must undergo a functional test every month, lasting at least 30 seconds. Tests should be conducted no sooner than 3 weeks and no later than 5 weeks apart. If equipped with self-testing/self-diagnostic features, emergency lights must automatically perform a 30-second test at least once every 30 days to check functionality and run diagnostics.
