The NFPA Standard

NFPA 10: Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers

  • 6-Year Internal Examination: Every six years, certain fire extinguishers must be completely emptied and inspected inside and out to ensure they remain in good condition.

  • Hydrostatic Testing: Fire extinguishers undergo pressurized testing at intervals relative to the last hydrostatic test (beginning with the hydrostatic test performed at the time of manufacture), to check for leaks or weaknesses. This ensures they can handle the pressure needed to operate properly.

  • Recharging After Use/Low Pressure: If a fire extinguisher is used—even just a little—it must be recharged to be fully operational for future emergencies. Inspections may also indicate the need for recharging.
